MISHE recently held a seminar on Hot Topics in AI, delivered by MISHE PIs Dr Muslim Jameel Syed from ATU Galway and Dr Saritha Unnikrishnan from ATU Sligo.

Muslim spoke on DeepSeek: Overhyped or The Next Big Thing in AI? His talk explored the DeepSeek architecture, capabilities, and innovations, comparing it with traditional search engines and AI models like ChatGPT. He also examined its impact on information retrieval, accuracy, and user experience, also addressing concerns like data bias, ethical risks, and search manipulation. Finally, he discussed whether DeepSeek truly lives up to the hype or if its potential is overstated.

Saritha spoke on Navigating the Bias-Variance Trade-Off: Common Biases and Mitigation Strategies. Her talk focussed on the relationship between the bias-variance tradeoff and underfitting/overfitting of machine learning models, from the mathematical theory to techniques for addressing bias and variance in real-world machine learning and deep learning applications.
