Fearghus Downes
Fearghus Downes is a researcher from Sligo, Ireland, currently pursuing a PhD in Mathematical Biology at ATU Sligo, specifically modelling of the bovine hormone dynamics. They studied Physics with Theoretical Physics at NUI Galway (2015–2019), spending the second semester of their third year at the (HKUST) Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Their final-year project focused on the mathematical modelling of traffic flow systems, developing an interest in applied mathematics and complex systems.
Their PhD research involves creating a mathematical model to describe the gene-hormone interactions that regulate the bovine estrus cycle. By modelling key reproductive events, this work aims to optimise artificial insemination timing and reduce issues such as twinning and missed heats. The project applies techniques from ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, and network theory, refining existing models and developing new ones.
Alongside their research, they lectured in Maths and Science at ATU from 2020 to 2023 and have been a tutor in the ATU Maths and Engineering Support Centre since 2021. While at ATU Sligo they are also actively involved in mathematics outreach programmes, contributing to “Maths Week”, Leaving Certificate revision classes and Maths Enrichment classes for the Maths Olympiad, helping to promote mathematical learning and engagement among students.
