Principal Investigator

Dr Konrad Mulrennan

Dr. Konrad Mulrennan is a lecturer in Mechatronic Engineering at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Sligo and Associate Director of the Health and Biomedical (HEAL) Research Centre. He is a Principal Investigator in both the Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Intelligent Systems for Health and Environment (MISHE) and the Precision Engineering and Manufacturing (PEM) Research Centre. His research focuses on applying artificial intelligence and data-driven methods to challenges in health and manufacturing.

Dr. Mulrennan received his honours degree in Mechatronic Engineering in 2013 and completed his PhD in 2018 at the Institute of Technology Sligo (now ATU). His doctoral research advanced the development of soft sensors for industrial processes, integrating multi-modal data, sensor fusion, and machine learning to predict polymer properties during extrusion—eliminating the need for traditional offline testing.

Following his PhD, he collaborated with GlaxoSmithKline to develop predictive models for energy demand in pharmaceutical manufacturing. His current research spans digital health, medical technologies, and industrial process optimisation. He supervises PhD projects in the area of health technology, manufacturing, robotics, and ML/AI, and leads interdisciplinary initiatives at the interface of engineering and clinical application.

Dr. Mulrennan also coordinates the EIT Health i-Days programme at ATU Sligo, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in health across Europe. He has led the development of technologies aimed at improving outcomes for individuals with chronic conditions, including diabetes, through regional and international collaborations.
