Dr Paul Moran
Dr. Paul Moran is a lecturer in computer science at the Atlantic Technological University, Donegal. He teaches on several modules at undergraduate and masters level with a focus on machine learning, vision, and data analytics. He also supervises taught masters dissertations. He completed a BSc. Physics and Astronomy at the University of Galway in 2010, and a PhD in Astrophysics in 2014.
His previous experience was as a research engineer in industry for 8 years. He worked as a machine vision engineer in the Equipment Engineering group at Boston Scientific Galway, focusing on the automation of the inspection of medical devices through a mix of machine vision, machine learning and robotics. Prior to that I worked in the R&D department of Valeo Vision Systems, a leading provider of driving assistance systems to automotive manufacturers. This role involved directing the development of computer vision algorithms, publishing papers, filing patents, design reviews with software and system architects, and guiding customers with technical requirements.
His doctoral work at the Centre for Astronomy at the University of Galway was funded by the Irish Research Council. It centered on multi-wavelength and polarization studies of rotation-powered pulsars. His work was published in 17 peer-reviewed research journals, and gathered over 240 citations.
